UN Resolution underlines important role of Ombudsman in achieving the SDGs
On 17 December 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution on The role of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law. This resolution is submitted biennially and the newly adopted version acknowledges the important contribution Ombudsman institutions make to ensure the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 16 on building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Rome hosts celebrations for the 45th anniversary of the Lazio Region Civic Defender: participants to be received by Pope Francis

Bilateral arrangement signed with the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia
New Zealand’s Chief Ombudsman and the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia signed the bilateral arrangement in Jakarta on Monday, 24 February 2025. How to build and maintain independence
Possibly the most important element to the success of an Ombudsman is the office’s independence. It must not be, or be seen to be, answerable to the government of the day or to the agencies within the office’s jurisdiction. At the same time, the office must also not be or be seen to be a community advocate. The Ombudsman must clearly be acting in the public interest at all times.

Victorian Ombudsman tabled report into Wodonga City Council’s overcharged waste management levy
Wodonga Council collected at least $18 million in extra revenue from its waste management levy over the past decade, using the surplus to fund other council services, the Ombudsman has found. Tabling her Investigation into Wodonga City Council’s overcharging of a waste management levy in the Victorian Parliament today, Ombudsman Deborah Glass said about 70 per cent of the revenue raised through the charge had been spent on waste-related services. Nearly a third had been spent on other council services, such as the maintenance of parks, gardens and other council activities.

IGT announces investigation into use of garnishee notices
On 16 May 2018, the Inspector-General of Taxation (IGT), Mr Ali Noroozi, announced an investigation into the allegations made during the ABC Four Corners program, aired on 9 April 2018, regarding Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) use of garnishee notices. Garnishee notices are the most common form of firmer action used by the ATO to recover tax debt. Such notices require third parties to pay the money they owe to a taxpayer to the ATO in satisfaction of the tax debt owed by that taxpayer. Accordingly, the cash flow of affected taxpayers may be disrupted with potentially severe impact on vulnerable small businesses and individuals.

UN CAT calls to establish NHRI by increasing powers of the Ombudsman
The Czech Republic received the final recommendations of the UN Committee Against Torture (hereinafter the “Committee”) based on the examination of the Sixth Periodic Report of the Czech Republic evaluating the implementation of obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The Committee received five reports from NGOs and requested also a statement from the Ombudsman.
