European Regional President Reinier van Zutphen discusses migration and asylum issues in Warsaw
The National Ombudsman of the Netherlands and European Regional President, Reinier van Zutphen, visited Warsaw last week. The aim of the visit was to talk to Frontex. Over the past years there have been many disturbing signals about pushbacks of migrants at the EU borders which sometimes resulted in people dying. Several National Ombudsman have addressed this in their own countries.

Successful completion of third phase of awareness campaign about role, responsibility and importance of Provincial Ombudsman
After successful completion of the 2nd phase of the project, the Hon'ble Provincial Ombudsman, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, decided to expand the awareness program throughout the province. Accordingly, different districts were visited for the purpose. So far, total 18 districts have been visited and awareness campaigns have been organized. This project has been sponsored by the IOI’s Regional Subsidy Programme.

Report on the monitoring of the Mandatory Disease Testing Act 2021, tabled in Parliament
On 5 February 2025, the NSW Ombudsman’s report monitoring the Mandatory Disease Testing Act 2021, was tabled in Parliament. The NSW Ombudsman has a statutory role to monitor the administration of the Mandatory Disease Testing Act 2021, providing for mandatory blood testing of a person whose bodily fluids have come into contact with those of a public sector worker in a work context.

Ombudsman oversight to be expanded
Ontario Ombudsman André Marin today welcomed the provincial government’s announcement that it will extend his office’s mandate into the “MUSH sector” – the vast, provincially-funded broader public sector comprising municipalities, universities, school boards and hospitals, as well as long-term care homes, children’s aid societies and police.

Ombudsman Hong Kong presents two investigation reports

Commencement of the Ombudsman Act 2017
The new Ombudsman Act 2017 commenced on 31 January 2018. The coming into effect of this new Act means that any person who is unhappy about how any government office deals with them, can complain to the Ombudsman. Furthermore, the Ombudsman is empowered by this new Act to not only investigate appropriate complaints that it received but can also initiate investigations on its own from information received from any other source including the media.

Misuse of Parliamentary staff budget entitlements in 2014
Ms Glass tabled her report into a matter referred to her by the Legislative Council in November 2015 this week. The Legislative Council asked the Ombudsman to investigate allegations of ALP MPs’ misuse of staff budget entitlements before the 2014 state election. She found 21 ALP Members of Victorian Parliament - including 11 serving and 10 former MPs - breached Parliament’s Members’ Guide by certifying payments to electorate officers used for party political campaigning.

Allegations “not substantiated” in matter referred to Victorian Ombudsman by parliamentary committee
In November 2016 the case of the transfer of young people to a hastily configured youth justice and remand centre inside a maximum-security adult prison, became subject to Supreme Court proceedings. Later, the case was referred to the ombudsman by the Victorian Parliament’s Legal and Social Issues Committee. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass has recommended no further action be taken after investigating the allegations.

Ombudsman South Australia declares the use of „spit hoods“ in juvenile detention centers unlawful
The application of ‘spit hoods’ to children and young people accommodated in South Australia’s youth detention centre is contrary to the Charter of Rights for youth detainees and contrary to law, South Australian Ombudsman Wayne Lines has determined. Tabling his investigation report in South Australian Parliament on 24 September 2019, Mr Lines called on the South Australian government to ban the use of spit hoods within the Adelaide Youth Training Centre within 12 months.

Ombudsman SA criticises treatment of young people in Adelaide Youth Training Centre
An investigation undertaken by the Ombudsman has identified that the agency formerly known as the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion, now the Department of Human Services, erred in its treatment of two young people in the Adelaide Youth Training Centre by subjecting them to inhumane treatment, including extended periods of isolation and solitary confinement.
