10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association Conference and Training
The 10th Biennial Caribbean Ombudsman Association Conference and Training will be held in Bermuda from 28th – 31st May. The theme for the conference is “Strengthening the Role and Performance of the Ombudsman and Human Rights Institutions in the Caribbean and Latin America”. The training will be facilitated by Dr. Victor Ayeni and the theme will be “Advancing the Ombudsman’s Impact: Roles, Services and Performance”.

Following his investigation into the placement of people under 65 in nursing homes, Ombudsman Peter Tyndall said that those he spoke with told him they had no option but to live in nursing homes due to a lack of support from the State.

Ombudsman held successful online conference to commemorate 50th anniversary
On 1 December 2021, the Office of the Ombudsman of Israel, in association with the IOI and AOM, hosted an international online conference on the theme "Protecting the Rights of Older People in an Age of Longevity", in celebration of the Israel Ombudsman's jubilee year. Video recordings of the conference are now available online.

Department sought repayment of €25,000 from man after his land flooded
A man complained to Ombudsman Peter Tyndall after the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine sought to recover a grant of over €25,000 from him following flooding of his land in Kerry. The man had received a grant under the Department’s Afforestation Scheme to establish a forest on his land. However the forest had been destroyed following severe flooding in 2009.

On January 13, 2020, Ombudsman Paul Dubé announced in a press release that Ms. Kelly Burke had just joined his office as Ontario’s new French Language Services Commissioner and Deputy Ombudsman. Ms. Burke was chosen by Mr. Dubé and an expert panel in a nationwide search.

Ombudsman passed away
It is with great sadness that the I.O.I. informs its members that Mr. Ofentse Moatlhodi Lepodise, Ombudsman for the Republic of Botswana, passed away on 18 October 2011. Mr. Lepodise was currently serving his second four-year term of office.

The Bermuda government authorised the development of the tourist resort 'Tucker’s Point' without requiring an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) beforehand. Bermuda Ombudsman Arlene Brock investigated the case and recently published a report on that matter.
