In 2024, the Office of the Queensland Ombudsman celebrates 50 years of service to the community. For half a century, this Office has given the people in Queensland free, impartial and confidential service and evolved to meet the changing needs.

The NSW Ombudsman tabled the Oversight of the Public Interest Disclosures Act 2022 Annual Report 2023–24 in Parliament on 11 December, 2024.  The report provides a snapshot of voluntary public interest disclosures made between 1 October 2023, when the Public Interest Disclosures Act 2022 (PID Act) commenced, and 30 June 2024.

The European Ombudsman has made a series of suggestions to help the European Commission ensure the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its decision making remains accountable.

National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) from 46 countries contributed to the development of a global report on women in prison, launched on 12 December 2024 by the Geneva-based Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT). The report highlights significant challenges and systemic discrimination faced by women in prisons around the globe, calling for urgent reforms and greater use of alternatives to detention.

The inaugural International Ombudsman Summit 2024, hosted by the Office of The Ombudsman, Hong Kong, was held on 3 December. The Summit coincided with the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the Office. To celebrate this important milestone, the 35th Anniversary Reception was also held in the evening.

In a series of unannounced visits to prominent educational institutions, Ombudsperson Punjab, Ms. Nabila Hakim Ali Khan, reinforced her commitment to ensuring a harassment-free environment for women. At King Edward Medical College, she evaluated the implementation and effectiveness of anti-harassment protocols. Her visit included interactions with faculty and staff to assess the institution’s adherence to preventive measures and policies safeguarding women.
