Victorian Ombudsman to investigate the use of “solitary confinement” and young people
Victorian Ombudsman, Deborah Glass, will investigate the use of “solitary confinement” involving young people in Victoria, using the United Nations’ Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT). Ombudsman submits special report on activity during coronavirus pandemic
On 8 September 2020, the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, Matanyahu Englman, presented to the parliament (Knesset) a special report on its activity during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Reference to the report will be made by Dr. Esther Ben-Haim, Head of the Office of the Ombudsman, during a webinar on the theme "Covid-19 and the Ombudsperson - Rising to the Challenge of a Pandemic", which will take place on 24 November 2020.

Building capacity to tackle the climate emergency
An NHRIs symposium held on the side-lines of COP26 from 3 - 5 November 2021 aims at providing a greater understanding of the climate regime to facilitate NHRI work to promote and support human rights within climate policy and climate accountability. On March 30, 2018, Nino Lomjaria, Public Defender of Georgia, submitted a report on the situation of human rights and freedoms in 2017 to the Parliament of Georgia.The report discusses the challenges and progress in the protection of human rights and freedoms enshrined in the constitution and names the state agencies and local self-governmental bodies that violated human rights and freedoms. The document also provides information about the implementation of the recommendations issued by the Public Defender.

Seimas Ombudsman calls for ratification of the Istanbul Convention
An investigation on providing assistance to victims of domestic violence revealed a sad reality: assistance to victims of violence is often still unavailable, those who call the police are still left alone with the perpetrator, and assistance often includes purely formal oral consultations, despite the obvious need for specific assistance. These and other striking conclusions were drawn by the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas, having summarized the results of the investigation into the provision of assistance to persons, who had experienced domestic violence.

Office of Investigator General transitions from an executive Ombudsman to a Parliamentary Ombudsman
The Office of the Ombudsman in Zambia has undergone a number of changes, which will be beneficial to the public in terms of more efficient and effective service delivery. On 5 January 2016, His Excellency Mr Edgar C. Lungu, the President of the Republic of Zambia signed the Constitution Bill Number 17 of 2015 which amongst other clauses changed the Office of the Investigator General to the Office of the Public Protector.

NSW Ombudsman releases new report into asbestos
The New South Wales (NSW) Ombudsman, Professor John McMillan, recently released a report ‘Asbestos: How NSW government agencies deal with the problem’. He found that there are serious gaps in the NSW Government’s response to the health risks posed by asbestos and how it can be handled and disposed of safely. The report follows an earlier NSW Ombudsman report, published in 2010.
