On 21 May 2024, the Commonwealth Ombudsman, in his role as the Commonwealth National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), published "Access All Areas: Monitoring Places of Detention 2022-23", a report which makes 12 recommendations to the Department of Home Affairs to ensure systemic improvements to how people are treated in immigration detention. 

The Chief Ombudsman says failures by the New Zealand Defence Force to share all crucial information had a major impact on his ability to fully investigate earlier Operation Burnham complaints and undermined the fundamental purposes of the Official Information Act (OIA).

On 8 May 2024, the People's Advocate Office marked a significant moment in the promotion and protection of human rights in the Republic of Moldova with the official launch of the Council of Europe Project to “Support to the People’s Advocate Office in the protection of human rights in the Republic of Moldova- Phase I”.

Existing laws and regulations provide the government with enough room to properly help citizens. Yet, in practice, the government often solves problems with even more laws, regulations and complex processes, while these do not prevent or solve most of the citizens’ problems.

The 13th IOI world conference started on Wednesday, 15 May 2024 in The Hague. After giving his opening speech, His Majesty the King of the Netherlands revealed together with the future generation three paintings on the theme of the conference: working together for our tomorrow. This was followed by the speech of the keynote speaker, Ian Buruma, with the title: We Are the People: Citizenship, Identity and the Nation-State.

The Alberta Ombudsman has released a public report on his investigation into the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program which found systemic issues in how the program assesses intellectual capacity. The investigation, initiated by a complaint from a mother advocating for her son, sheds light on legislative flaws in the program’s eligibility criteria and decision-making process.

The 13th World Conference and General Assembly of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) was successfully hosted by the National Ombudsman of the Netherlands in The Hague from 12 – 17 May 2024. After the years of the pandemic, the conference provided an opportunity for the entire membership of the IOI to meet again in person after eight long years and 200 delegates from 60 different countries and all six IOI regions participated in this important quadrennial event.
