Staffordshire County Council’s decision not to assess some vulnerable people who may have been unlawfully deprived of their liberty has been criticised in an investigation by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman of the Province of Santa Fe, Raúl Lamberto, received in Rosario Nobel Peace Prize winner, Leyma Gbowee, in the city of Rosario last Friday, 31st of March 2019. Leyma is a Liberian activist who led the peace movement that put an end to the second Liberian civil war in 2003.

También tomaron posesión de su cargo como Defensores del Pueblo adjuntos Bárbara Bonelli, Silke Mayra Arndt, Paula Andrea Streger, Carlos Palmiotti y Arturo Pozzali. Los seis estarán al frente de la institución durante el período 2019-2024.

On 1 April 2019 Ms Winnie Chiu Wai-yin has taken office as the new Ombudsman of Hong Kong. Ms Chiu follows former Hong Kong Ombudsman Connie Lau, who completed her term on 31 March 2019.

The Ombudsman Association’s 2019 Conference on “Driving Improvements: collaboration and peer learning” will be held in Belfast on 21/22 May 2019. Alongside plenary sessions on the need for kindness and emotion in public policy, there will be workshops on the common challenges faced by all Ombudsman schemes.

The Ombudsman of Valle d’Aosta hosted an IOI seminar on the benefits of networking, sharing best practices and supporting colleagues under threat. With the view to promote the Ombudsman concept, participants adopted the Aosta Declaration, which calls for the creation of a National Ombudsman in Italy.

A man lost his eye due to NHS failures in treating an eye infection, causing him significant distress and leaving him unable to work or drive. An investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) has found that the failure to diagnose and treat the complainant’s eye infection correctly, meant that it became untreatable and, as a result, he had to have one eye surgically removed.
