    Leadership Retreat in Bogor: Cooperation of the Commissioners of the Indonesian and Dutch National Ombudsman institutions

    The President of the Republic of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, has assented to the Ombudsman Amendment Bill, effective 1 February 2024. Ombudsman Grace Malera hailed the Malawi Leader for signing the Bill into law which among other things provides clarity on the broadened mandate of the Office in terms of which organs of government can be investigated.

    Case study: claims of unfair promotion practices in the armed forces of Malta

    A Major in the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) lodged a complaint after he was not promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel despite meeting the eligibility criteria. He claimed the selection process for the promotion was flawed and that he suffered an injustice as a result. The investigation by the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Malta examined the selection process used for promotions from Major to Lieutenant Colonel within the AFM.

    Pregnant woman turned away after Ealing council uses outdated definition of domestic abuse, Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman says

    Ealing council wrongly turned away a pregnant woman who approached it for help with housing, despite police and other agencies saying it was not safe for her to return to her tenancy in another area. The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman was asked to investigate. It found the council used an outdated, narrow definition of domestic abuse, limiting it to physical attacks.

The Ombudsperson’s investigation was commenced after being advised by the ministry that as of the beginning of December 2024, thousands of November social assistance cheques were not yet delivered.

    The Ukrainian Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Valeriya Lutkovska, submitted a request to the Prime Minister of Ukraine concerning the elimination of violations of the right of legal protection, caused by violations during judicial proceedings.
