Expanded jurisdiction over municipalities takes effect
Marianne Ryan, Alberta’s ninth Ombudsman, welcomes legislative changes that expand her office’s jurisdiction to include municipalities. The updated legislation takes effect April 1, 2018 and includes ‘municipalities’ to the jurisdiction, alongside Alberta government departments, designated professional organizations and the Patient Concerns Resolution Process of Alberta Health Services.

Ombudsman of Portugal and Turkey launch partnership under EU program
The partnership between the Ombudsman of Portugal and his Turkish counterpart was officially launched on Monday 12th of November in Ankara with a kick-off meeting between the teams from both institutions. The meeting followed the Portuguese Ombudsman selection by the European Union for a twinning project to reinforce the technical training of the Turkish Ombudsman staff.

Constitutional Court bans automatic licence plate recognition
Acting on a petition by the Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia has annulled legislation which allowed police to use systems for automatic license plate recognition (ANPR). The said legislation, such as it was, contravened the constitutional right to protection of personal data. The now-annulled provisions were introduced into the Police Tasks And Powers Act in February 2017 and the Ombudsman filed the said constitutional challenge of legislation in question later that same year.

This year marks the second annual celebration of a highly impactful profession that has been around for centuries, but still remains unknown. On 10 October 2019, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Dispute Resolution Section Ombuds Committee invites you to the celebration of the ombudsman profession. Ombuds Day is inclusive of all types of ombuds and will occur on the second Thursday of October each year.
