Preparations for I.O.I. world conference under way
The Ombudsmen and staff of the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsmen look forward to welcoming the ombudsman community to New Zealand in November 2012 to the I.O.I. world conference. Formal invitations and information about registration will be sent out in a few months and the conference website has recently gone "live".

The I.O.I. strives to encourage and support research and study into the institution of the ombudsman as well as to collect, store and disseminate research data. Since 2010 the I.O.I. the General Secretariat in Vienna hosts the Institute's archives.

Deadline for feedback and comments on draft by-laws
At the IOI World Conference held in Wellington, New Zealand in November 2012, institutional members in good standing will be requested to vote on the IOI’s new by-laws. A first draft of these new by-laws, has been sent to members requesting them to send their comments and remarks.

Second International Ombudsman Conference
Several representatives of IOI member institutions will participate in the 2nd Curaçao International Ombudsman Conference held from 4 to 8 June 2012 in Curaçao. Asylum regulations related to unaccompanied minors
Last year the number of foreign children entering Hungary illegally and unaccompanied by parents or adults significantly increased. The ombudsman suggests clarification of the laws setting out the work of police and the immigration authority so that the children’s rights of minors regardless of their citizenship can be enforced.

Ombudsperson of British Columbia releases Annual Report 2012/2013
Provincial Ombudsperson Kim Carter released her 2012/13 annual report on 18 June 2013. Nearly 7,500 inquiries and complaints were responded to and 1,900 early resolutions or investigations were completed in 2012/13.

Control Yuan holds staff exchange program with Asian-Pacific and African Counterparts
The 2013 Staff Exchange Program between the Control Yuan and Ombudsman/Human Rights Offices overseas was held from June 24 to 26. The program was joined by eight participants from Thailand, Vietnam, Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Fiji, the Gambia and Swaziland.

On 3 July 2013, Ms Emily O’Reilly, Ombudsman and Information Commissioner of Ireland, has been elected by the European Parliament and will succeed Nikiforos Diamandouros as new European Ombudsman.

European Network of Ombudsmen meets in Dublin to discuss good administration and the rights of the citizen
On 16 and 17 September the next Ombudsman, Emily O’Reilly and outgoing European Ombudsman Professor Nikiforos Diamandouros, will co-host the 9th National Seminar of the European Network of Ombudsmen. Forty National Ombudsmen from all over Europe will meet in Dublin Castle to exchange ideas and experiences in order to promote best practice among European Ombudsmen.

The report draws attention to the fact that chronic self-injury among women offenders continues to be routinely met with control and security-focused responses. The investigation raises concerns about the capacity of the Correctional Service of Canada to safely manage the most acute cases of mental illness and chronic self-injury.

African Ombudsman summit to be held in Johannesburg
The African Ombudsman Summit will be held from 25 to 26 February 2014 in Johannesburg and is being hosted by the African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC), on behalf of the African Ombudsman and Mediators’ Association (AOMA). The Summit’s theme is “Strengthening Good Governance in Africa through the Role of the Ombudsman”.
